KWC selects the best wines for the Korean palate

지난 6월 23일 코리아와인챌린지(이하 KWC) 2017이 대장정의 막을 내렸다. 올해 13회를 맞이한 KWC에는 세계 23개국에서 810종의 와인들이 출품했다. 주목할 것은 양적인 성공만이 아니다. 출품 와인의 퀄리티는 눈에 띄게 높아졌고, 생소한 산지의 와인들이 대거 등장하여 앞으로 국내 와인 시장이 더욱 다양하고 풍성해질 것이라는 기대가 생겼다.
우리 입맛에 맞는 최고의 와인을 뽑는다
월간 <Wine Review>가 주최하는 국내 유일의 국제 와인 경쟁 대회인 Korea WineChallenge(이하 KWC)가 올해 제 13회를 맞이했다. 지난 12년 동안 KWC는 ‘한국인의 입맛에 맞는 와인을 선별하여 소비자에게 신뢰할 수 있는 와인을 소개한다’는 슬로건 아래 한국 와인 시장의 발전을 위해 노력해 왔다. 이에 KWC는 국내에서는 국제 와인시장 트렌드를 파악하는 수단으로 여겨지며, 해외에서는 한국 와인시장 진입 시 반드시 고려해야 할 하나의 지표로 활용되고 있다.
KWC 2017에는 23개국에서 총 810종의 와인으로 역대 가장 다양한 국가에서 와인이 출품 되었다. 올해도 마찬가지로 그리스, 루마니아, 체코, 리투아니아, 아제르바이잔, 인도네시아 등 국내에 잘 알려지지 않은 생산국의 와인 출품이 두각을 드러냈다. 스파클링 와인의 참여율은 9.1%로 평균 4~5%의 참여율을 보이던 예년에 비해 크게 상승하였으며, 다양한 스위트 와인과 포티파이드 와인이 출품되었다. 이를 통해 국내에서 가장 공신력있는 국제 와인 대회로는 KWC가 유일무이함과 동시에 국제적으로 강세를 보이고 있는 스파클링 와인 시장의 확대를 반영하여 다양화된 국내 와인 시장의 변화를 선도하고 있음을 볼 수 있었다.
본 대회에 참가한 모든 와인들은 지난 6월 12일 월요일부터 6월 23일 금요일까지 2주간 국가, 품종, 블렌딩 비율, 양조방법, 가격 등에 따른 카테고리로 나뉘어져 철저한 감독하에 공정한 블라인드 테이스팅을 통해 평가되었다. 품평방식은 총점 100점 중 기본적으로 50점을 부여하고, 여기에 더해 각 와인에 대한 ‘색상과 외양’에 6점, ‘향과 부케’에 12점, ‘맛과 여운’에 20점 그리고 ‘조화와 균형’에 12점으로 나누어 심사위원들이 최대 50점을 와인에 부여하는 방식으로 공정하고 엄격하게 평가했다. KWC 2017의 심사위원은 대중과 가까이 소통하는 현직 소믈리에들과 와인 전문가들로 구성되었다. 해를 거듭할수록 높아지는 국제적 인지도와 더불어 올해로 13주년을 맞이한 공신력 있는 국제 대회인 만큼 심사위원단을 새롭게 구성하고 심사위원 선정 기준과 규정을 더욱 엄격히 하여 보다 공정한 심사가 될 수 있도록 신중을 기하였다. KWC 개최 이래 최초로 구성된 심사위원 조장단 19명을 비롯하여, 기존 심사위원단 26명과 각종 대회 수상 및 실력 있는 신규 심사위원 12명이 선출되어 KWC 2017과 함께 하였다. 조장으로 선정된 19명의 심사위원들은 한 해 동안 KWC 2017 관련 기획 기사 게재, 수상와인 시음회 등의 마케팅 활동 참여 등 KWC 2017 수상와인을 홍보하는 엠버서더로서의 활동을 수행하게 된다.
품질이 뛰어난 전세계 많은 와인들의 참가는 KWC의 위상을 더욱 드높여 주었고 한국 와인 시장에 여러 가능성을 열어주었다. KWC 2017의 메달수상은 부문별 최고의 상인 ‘트로피’가 레드 와인, 화이트 와인, 스파클링 와인, 로제 와인, 스위트 와인, 아이스 와인, 포티파이드 와인에 부여되어 총 7개로 구성되었다. 그 밖의 트
로피 급의 최고상에 부합하는 높은 점수(94점 이상)를 받은 13개 국가의 와인에 대해서도 객관적인 품평의 결과 그 품질을 인정하여 ‘국가별 베스트’가 수여되었다. 올해는 다출품 국가의 와인 중 최고 점수를 받은 총 11개의 레드와인과 2개의 화이트 와인이 수상하였다. 국가별 베스트 부문 수상 국가는 아르헨티나, 호주, 칠레, 프랑스, 그리스, 헝가리, 이탈리아, 포르투갈, 루마니아, 스페인, 미국, 뉴질랜드, 체코가 들어갔다. 올해는 루마니아 레드 와인과 체코 화이트 와인이 어느 해보다 뛰어난 품질을 선보이며 국가별 베스트 와인에 선정되었다.
최고 점수를 받은 각 국가의 베스트 레드 와인 11종이 다시 경합을 벌여 ‘트로피’ 레드 와인이 선정되었다. 결과적으로 KWC 2017에는 총 810종의 와인 중 7개의 트로피, 13개의 국가별 베스트, 113개의 금메달, 179개의 은메달, 136개의 동메달을 선정하였다. 이들 와인이 한국 와인시장에서 와인을 선택하는 하나의 지표로서 소비자들에게 소중한 길잡이가 되기를 바란다.

KWC selects the best wines for the Korean palate
This year marked the 13th anniversary of Korea’s one and only International Wine Competition, known as the Korea Wine Challenge (KWC), hosted by the monthly magazine <Wine Review>. Under the slogan of ‘Selecting the best quality wines for the Korean palate to introduce the most trustworthy wines to customers,’ KWC has made dedicated efforts to develop the Korean wine market over the past 12 years. Domestically, KWC is considered an unparalleled platform for identifying global trends in the wine industry, while being one of the useful indicators for overseas wineries to consider when preparing to enter the Korean market. The judges for the KWC 2017 consisted of wine experts including practicing sommeliers working in close contact with the general public, and wine importers who actually import fine wines into Korea through carefully researching the preferences of the general population.
For KWC 2017, a total of 810 wines from 23 countries were exhibited, constituting an array from the most diverse set of countries in the competition’s history. Once again, there were stand-out wines from countries that are less familiar in Korea, including Greece, Romania, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, and Indonesia. The participation rate for sparkling wines was 9.1 percent, significantly higher than the average of 4 to 5 percent seen in previous years. A range of sweet wines and fortified wines were also exhibited. It is distinctions like these that give KWC its unique position in Korea as a prestigious international wine competition. By reflecting the expansion of the internationally strong sparkling wine market, KWC can be seen as leading the diversification of the Korean wine market.
Over the last two weeks, from Monday, June 12, through Friday, June 23, all of the wines that participated in this competition were categorized according to country of origin, variety, blending ratio, oenology and price, as well as being evaluated through impartial and strictly monitored blind tasting. The competition adopted a 100-point scoring system in which a default score of 50 points was given to all wines entering the contest as a courtesy for the effort of sending a bottle of wine for the competition. The remaining 50 points were strictly and fairly evaluated by a select panel of judges in the following categories; 6 points for the ‘color and appearance’, 12 points for ‘aroma and bouquet’, 20 points for ‘flavor and finish’, and 12 points for ‘harmony and balance’. To ensure impartiality, a brand-new panel was assembled, and the selection criteria and regulations for judges were made even more rigorous, as befits an internationally reputable competition whose global recognition has increased with every passing year of its 13-year history. With 19 judge facilitators added for the first time since the KWC began, the panelists for KWC 2017 also included the existing judging panel of 26 and 12 new panelists drawn from award-winners or otherwise qualified judges. For one year, the 19 judge facilitators will serve as ambassadors promoting the award-winning wines from KWC 2017, for instance, by writing feature articles related to the event 2017 and taking part in marketing activities, such as tasting events for award-winning wines.
The inclusion of a variety of quality fine wines has raised the international reputation of the KWC to global status and opened wider opportunities for the Korean wine market. As for the KWC 2017’s awards, ‘Trophies’ were given to the best wines in seven different categories: Red,White, Sparkling, Rose, Sweet, Ice, and Fortified. Additional awards, equally prestigious to a trophy, were bestowed on wines scoring over 94 points, including products from 13 countries. A total of 11 Best Reds and 2 Best Whites with the highest points were awarded among wines from nations with the highest number of entries this year. Best Country awards went to Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, USA, New Zealand, and the Czech Republic. This year a Red wine from Romania and a White wine from the Czech Republic showed more superb quality than ever, leading their nations to win the Best Country awards.
Those 11 Best Red wines contended with each other to clinch the one and only ‘Trophy’ red wine. From a total of 810 entries at the KWC 2017, the final tally of awards was 7 Trophies, 13 Best Countries, 113 Gold Medals, 179 Silver Medals, and 136 Bronze Medals. These wines will hopefully serve as superb guides for Korean wine consumers, showing the way in selecting fine wines.
